Five Books chosen by Charlie Haylock

Fast Fury by Freddie Truman, Stanley Paul & Co. Ltd. 1961

My schoolboy dream was to open the bowling for England .and I ‘went’ for my dream. Freddie Truman was rated as the fastest and best bowler in the world and the first one to reach 300 test wickets. This was his autobiography.

Vocabulary of East Anglia by Rev. Robert Forby, J.B. Nichols & Son  1830 Vol. I & Vol. II (first edition)

For me a valuable reference book on the grammar and vocabulary of the East Anglian dialects showing the wealth and depth of the Suffolk and Norfolk dialects.

Suffolk Dialect of the 20th Century (Third Edition) by A.O.D. Claxton, Norman Adlard & Co 1968

A fantastic book that completely endorsed Rev. Robert Forby, but in greater depth and specifically Suffolk .also more accurate due to greater research.

The Adventure of English by Melvyn Bragg, Hodder & Stoughton

I was absolutely hooked on the TV series of the same name narrated by Melvyn Bragg. I was glued to the set and it was obvious I had to get the book.

A New Suffolk Garland - An Anthology of Suffolk Writing and Art.

Published for ‘The Festival of Suffolk’  in association with The Aldeburgh Bookshop. The Boydell Press 2022. This book was compiled to celebrate the late Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee and she received a special copy.In this rather prestigious book, I was recognised as a Suffolk author and an excerpt from my Sloightly on th' Huh was included in the anthology.
